Vibration is all around us, from the motor running of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning, and Cooling) to road vibrations and other unavoidable “background” vibration noises – we live in a noisy, vibrating world! In a variety of research and production applications, vibration could be a significant limiting factor in performance. The interference signal is an optical path difference (OPD) dependent function in an optical interferometer. Because it is susceptible to environmental vibrations, many researchers use interferometers to measure various vibration distributions. During the experiment, if every component of the optical system - illuminator, mirror, measuring device - moves simultaneously without relative motion, the interference fringes would be clear. Conversely, if there is relative motion between components, the interference fringes become blurred. Sometimes, if the experiment uses mechanically moving or vibrating elements, vibration isolation is necessary to obtain a good signal without disturbing other optical components that are already aligned. This issue is critical to the success or failure of delicate, vibration-sensitive optical experiments. In this study, we use two experimental optical setups to test the stability of Michelson interference under the influence of environmental and artificial vibrations by analyzing optical signals. One detector monitors fluctuations from the laser source, and the other simultaneously records the interference intensity. Several sets of interference intensities were measured repeatedly in two experiments. The optical intensities obtained in the time domain are then transferred to the frequency domain to reveal the specific environmental vibrations. The results show that the frequency-domain analysis clearly shows that replacing the moving mirror with the moving retro-reflector greatly improves the stability of interference intensity.
