台灣的科普出版物大都來自翻譯作品，但科普翻譯的相關研究十分少，且多限於「信」與「達」觀點討論。1989年德國學者Gutt應用關聯理論於翻譯研究，將翻譯視為跨語言的溝通現象，從認知導向解釋翻譯問題，根據人類認知推理本質的「關聯原則」提供了譯者一個翻譯決策的架構。本文應用關聯原理研究理查．費曼口述故事集Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman! (1985)的兩個中譯本標題翻譯，比較何者的翻譯與目標讀者建立較佳的關聯程度。研究資料為台灣第一暢銷的科普書吳程遠譯本《別鬧了，費曼先生！—科學頑童的故事》(1993)以及黃達河譯本《智慧遊戲—諾貝爾獎得主范曼的妙人妙事》(1989)。研究結果顯示，吳版提供的背景知識效果高達89.13% (41/46)，遠高於黃版的背景知識效果21.74% (10/46)；如此懸殊的差距，說明了吳程遠譯本作為台灣第一暢銷的科普書，在書名及故事標題翻譯上，成功建立與讀者的高度關聯性。反觀，黃達河譯本，其所翻譯的書名及故事標題多數未能有效與讀者建立起的關聯，未能達成科普目的。因此，科普譯者除了根據原文語言結構外更應充分考慮讀者認知環境差異，提供具有足夠背景知識效果的譯本，使譯文與讀者達到最佳關聯性，讓科普書籍透過翻譯發揮科學普及的功能。

Most popular science publications in Taiwan are from translations; however, the relevant research on popular science translations remains scarce and limits its discussions from the perspective of Xìn (faithfulness) and Dá (expressiveness). In 1989, the German scholar Ernst-August Gutt applied Relevance theory to translation studies, defining translation as interlingual communication phenomena and accounting translation from cognitive-oriented perspective, which claims that the inferential nature of human communication is based on the principles of relevance, and this provides translators with a framework of translational practice. This research applies the principle of relevance to investigate the title and chapter title translations of two Chinese versions of Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!, Bie Nao Le, Fei Man Xian Sheng! Ke Xue Wan Tong De Gu Shi. [別鬧了，費曼先生！—科學頑童的故事] (1993) translated by Wu Cheng-yuan [吳程遠] and Zhi Hui You Xi —Nuo Bei Er Jiang De Zhu Fan Man De Miao Ren Miao Shi [智慧遊戲—諾貝爾獎得主范曼的妙人妙事] (1989) translated by Huang Da-he [黃達河]. It is aimed to find out which translation establishes better degree of relevance with its readers.
The results show that the contextual effects of Wu’s translation is amount to 89.13% (41 out of 46), which is much higher than that of Huang’s translation, 21.74% (10 out of 46); such an salient difference implies that as the best-selling popular science book, Wu’s translation of the book title and the chapter titles to some extent establishes high level of relevance with its readers. On the contrary, most of Huang’s renderings do not effectively establish appropriate relevance with its readers, and therefore, fail to fulfill the goal of science popularization. In terms of title translation, the translators of popular science should not just render its literal meaning. They should be more aware of the difference in the cognitive environment of the TT readers so as to produce the translations with adequate contextual effect to fulfill the function of popular science book through translations.
