摘要
本研究旨在討論意識流譯文中的註解是否有其必要性,同時也分析能否有效的幫助讀者理解意識流作品本身。意識流作品的特徵是描繪故事中的人物之意識流動,而意識是毫無邏輯的概念,在無跡可尋的方向下所呈現的故事內容會使讀者難以理解書中內容。因此,如果在翻譯時,譯者加以利用註釋的功能,便可以去輔佐讀者理解這晦澀難懂的意識流作品。而本文探討之研究問題有三:(1)在《海浪》的兩版出版譯文中所提供的註釋中,其註釋中之全部內容的功能是否具有必要性或者可忽略不提供該註釋內容?(2)譯者註釋的詞彙或者段落是否有註解之必要?(3)《海浪》的兩版出版譯文中的註釋是否有達到幫助讀者理解作品本身?
本研究將《海浪》的兩版出版譯文中所提供的註釋分為九大類,分別是人名、地名、動物、植物、宗教文本、事件、引用、物件和其他無法歸類在以上八類的名詞。本研究會從每個類別取出一個註釋做為例子,深入討論註釋本身以及其註釋內容是否全部內容皆具有必要性;為此,本研究將註釋內容的功能分為相關必要資訊(RSI)以及相關額外資訊(ARI),前者屬於必要性且對讀者有一定幫助之功能,後者則是可以忽略且次要的資訊。本研究透過讀者反饋問卷來判斷哪些類別的註釋是必要的,同時也可以透過統計註釋中的資訊來探討其屬於必要還是次要的資訊。而透過參與者的反饋,研究者也可以加以分析該註釋是否有幫助讀者理解文本內容。研究結果顯示,人名、地名、動物、植物、事件、宗教文本以及物件這幾類的註釋具有必要性;且有趣的是,研究者發現譯者使用的譯文字詞合宜有時可以不需要註解,譯文本身便是最好的解釋。但本研究發現兩位譯者只是解釋詞彙本身,並非解釋該註釋詞彙那段的意識流動給讀者理解。綜而言之,本研究所挑選的兩版譯文皆未針對作品中之意識流本身註解幫助讀者;兩位譯者只針對單一詞彙給予註釋,字裡行間流動的意識流以及文字的演繹則是留給讀者自行咀嚼。
Abstract
This study aims to discuss the necessity of annotations in the translated stream-of-consciousness texts and analyze whether they effectively assist readers in understanding the stream-of-consciousness works themselves. The characteristic of stream-of-consciousness works is the depiction of the flow of consciousness of characters in the story, and consciousness is a concept without logic. The presentation of the story content in an untraceable direction makes it difficult for readers to understand the book's content. Therefore, if translators use annotations during translation, it can assist readers in understanding these complex and difficult-to-understand stream-of-consciousness works. The research questions addressed in this paper are threefold: (1) Do the annotations provided in the two translated versions of The Waves serve a necessary function, or can they be ignored? (2) Is there a need for annotations on the vocabulary or paragraphs in the translator's notes? (3) Do the annotations in the two versions of the translated text The Waves help readers understand the work?
Moreover, this study categorizes the annotations provided in the two versions of the translated text of The Waves into nine major types: personal names, place names, animals, plants, religious texts, events, quotations, objects, and other nouns that cannot be classified into the above eight categories. The study will take one annotation from each category as an example and discuss whether the annotation itself and its content are necessary. For this purpose, the study classifies the functionality of annotation content into Relevant Necessary Information (RNI) and Relevant Additional Information (RAI), with the former being necessary and helpful to readers and the latter being information that can be ignored and is secondary. The study will use reader feedback surveys to determine which categories of annotations are necessary. Additionally, statistical analysis of the information in the annotations will be conducted to explore whether it is necessary or secondary information. Through participant feedback, the researchers can also analyze whether the annotations help readers understand the text content. The study results show that annotations in personal names, place names, animals, plants, events, religious texts, and objects are necessary. Interestingly, the study found that sometimes, the translator's appropriate use of translated words does not require annotations, as the translated text itself is the best explanation. However, the study found that the two translators only explained the vocabulary and did not explain the stream-of-consciousness flow in that segment to help readers understand. In conclusion, the two selected translated versions in this study did not provide annotations to assist readers in understanding the stream of consciousness in the work itself; the two translators only provided annotations for individual vocabulary, leaving the flow of stream of consciousness and the interpretation of the text to the readers.
