近年來美國影集在台灣受到的高度關注，隨著主題取材的方向也更為多元，對於觀眾來說，影集已不僅限於娛樂取向，更帶著觀眾一起學習新知。在觀眾探索新領域的過程中，字幕不外乎是其中最關鍵的一環，尤其是當對話內容涉及大量對大部分觀眾來說不熟悉的術語時。本研究以美國電視喜劇影集《生活大爆炸》為例，意在探討譯者在處理科學術語文句時使用之翻譯策略，針對觀眾較不熟悉的科學概念與用語作為研究例子，並觀察在前後文的包裝下，譯文是否在符合字幕翻譯要求的情況下，達到Vermeer目的論（1989），並且藉由Vinay 與 Darbelnet 的四項翻譯技巧，如借譯 (borrowing)、 語義轉借 (calque)、直譯(literal translation)與轉譯(transposition)以及陸殿揚所提出的翻譯技巧，如增譯 (amplification)、倒 置(inversion) ，來分析例子，探討譯文是否符合Newmark (1988) 「溝通翻譯」。
最後研究結果顯示，轉譯 (transposition) 增譯 (amplification)、倒 置(inversion) 符合Newmark (1988) 「溝通翻譯」之標準。然而，借譯 (borrowing)、 語義轉借 (calque)、直譯 (literal translation)較不完全符合「溝通翻譯」之範疇。另一方面，所有採用的翻譯技巧都符合Vermeer

American TV series have received high recognition in Taiwan in recent years. With the growing diversity of the material adopted in TV series, TV series nowadays not only can offer the entertainment to the audience, but also serve as a resource for the audience to learn something new. In the process of learning something new, subtitling then becomes one of the most crucial elements, especially when the content of the dialogues involves a great amount of terms that are unfamiliar to most of the audience. This study aims to explore how the translators manage to apply translation strategies in the subtitling of a well-known science-backed television sitcom, The Big Bang Theory and whether the translated subtitle can meet the requirement of Vermeer’s Skopos Theory. Also, in the study, several translation techniques, such as Vinay and Darbelnet’s borrowing, calque, literal translation, and transposition, as well as the translation strategies proposed by Dian-yang Lu, such as amplification and inversion, are discussed and used to analyze research data and show whether each translation method has achieved the goal of Newmark's (1988) communicative translation.
The final research results show that transposition, amplification, and inversion have achieved the standard of "communicative translation" proposed by Newmark (1988). However, borrowing, calque, and literal translation are less in line with the scope of "communicative translation". On the other hand, all the translation methods adopted have fulfilled the purpose proposed by Vermeer's Skopos Theory (1989).
