Bamboo possesses environmentally friendly and tough property. Its tensile strength is higher than steel. In addition, it inhales carbon dioxide and releases 35% more oxygen than trees when bamboo undergoes photosynthesis. If bamboo materials can be integrated into life, they will definitely fit the sustainability subject. This research mainly develops a bamboo cup manufacturing equipment for focusing on developing a CNC bamboo cup manufacturing machine with real-time measurement function. It is expected to be able to make large cups from large bamboos and small cups from small bamboos to achieve the goal of zero waste. Bamboo is not as stable as wood. The thickness and irregular outer diameter of each bamboo are different. During the turning process, it is easy to cause cracks due to uneven inner and outer diameters. Moreover, bamboo is a natural material, and it is difficult to handle the processing method for manufacturing bamboo cups. It needs to rely on experienced masters to fabricate bamboo cups for expectations. In order to solve the problem of insufficient output and operator experience, the overall process is automated and the experience is converted into quantifiable data. A computer is used to determine whether the bamboo material is suitable for processing, and based on the appearance data of the bamboo material. A variety of processing solutions are provided to users so that the appearance of the bamboo cup is not monotonous. The CNC bamboo cup processing machine with real-time measurement includes a lathe body with a pneumatic inner support jaw, a tailstock module for bamboo materials to be automatically centered, and a pair of resistance ruler for real-time measurement, a set of pneumatic clamps for loading and unloading bamboo materials, and a set of bamboo storage bins. The control system is installed by SYNTEC controller, which uses Ethernet and Modbus protocol to transmit the eccentric data of bamboo materials measured by the resistance ruler to the computer. The eccentric calculation and the selection of various bamboo cup shapes are performed by LabVIEW system. The calculation results are transmitted to SYNTEC controller for processing bamboo material. This research can not only improve product quality and output, but also reduce labor costs and capacity requirements. It can be to self-adjust the processing pattern according to the size and contour of bamboo materials for achieving the goal of zero waste.
