本研究旨在翻譯18世紀英國作家勞倫斯史登(Laurence Sterne)的作品《一段經由法國與義大利的情感之旅》一書，期望藉由翻譯《一段經由法國與義大利的情感之旅》讓更多台灣讀者認識史登之作品，並檢視翻譯過程中譯者使用之文獻資料及工具，以及如何用古特(Ernst-August Gutt)的關聯理論作為翻譯原則解決所遇到的問題。此外，本翻譯技術報告亦與石永禮翻譯之簡體版《多情客遊記》做比對，檢視石永禮與譯者翻譯之差別。在翻譯此作品過程中遇到的四個翻譯問題，包括1)標點符號是否保留、2)是否增加註解、3)雙關語的呈現方式、4)長句如何處理，譯者試圖運用關聯理論中提出的原則來處理這些問題。在標點符號方面，譯者保留了原文中作為交際線索的破折號，以呈現原文中敘述者意識的流動及語氣的轉換。為避免現代台灣讀者不熟悉18世紀西方文學作品中的時代背景及作品相關背景知識，譯者增加註解為讀者提供情境知識，從而創造出情境效果。在翻譯雙關語時，譯者在譯文中呈現雙關語的使用，並以增加註解的方式，讓讀者理解原文及翻譯中的雙關語意義。在長句方面，譯者試圖保留長句中的隱意，以呈現作者獨特的寫作風格，簡而言之，譯者依循關聯理論之原則意圖保留交際線索與隱意，為讀者創造出情境效果，並運用增譯、增加註解等翻譯技巧，以提供讀者情境知識，進而減輕讀者閱讀所耗費的心力，未來有興趣翻譯史登作品的譯者可參考本報告提供之資訊與工具。

This research aims to introduce how the translation was completed by using Gutt’s relevance theory to translate Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey Through France And Italy. A comparison was made between the translator’s translation and Shi Yongli’s [石永礼] Duo Qing Ke You Ji [多情客游记], the simplified Chinese translation. Four main translation problems the translator has encountered during the translation process include (1)punctuation, (2)footnotes, (3)puns, and (4)long sentences. The translator tried to use principles of relevance theory to deal with these problems. As punctuation was significant communicative clues in the original, the translator preserved dashes to present flows and turns of the narrator’s consciousness and tones. To prevent readers from confusing the author’s footnotes with the translator’s footnotes, the translator used a different form of footnotes to provide Taiwan’s readers with the context of the 18th century work, and thus, creating adequate contextual effects. With regard to the rendering of puns, the translator tried to present the usage of puns in the original and added footnotes to have readers comprehend dual meanings of puns in the original and the translation. As to the rendering of the long sentences, the translator tried to preserve implicatures embedded in the long sentences to present the author’s unique writing style. By analyzing the translation process, this research tried to provide prospective translators interested in translating Sterne’s works with consulting materials and online resources for future reference.
