Being the important places where local residents go for daily leisure activities, urban neighborhood parks are also basic units for recreation. However, the abundant neighborhood parks and insufficient funds makes some of them fail to meet the public needs in usability, which results in a low park use rate, idle and abandoned facilities and equipment, and an poorer living environment quality.
This study used literature review and collected data on the current status of neighborhood parks in Yuanlin Township, in order to understand the factors that affect public satisfaction in using the neighborhood parks. Using “entrances and routes”, “plants arrangement in the park”, “restrooms in the park”, “lighting facilities”, “recreation facilities”, “sports facilities”, “children’s recreation facilities”, and “parking space” as variables, this study chose the users of Yuanlin Park, Baiguo Mountain Park, and South District Park, as the research subjects by random sampling for a questionnaire survey. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent-sample t test, One-way ANOVA, and correlation analysis to determine the correlation between the current status of parks and the satisfaction of park users. From the perspective of users, this study combined the user satisfaction questionnaire with records and photos of the park facilities and environment to summarize, analyze, and explore all the parks’ existing shortages and the corresponding solutions. The findings can serve as a reference to improve the neighborhood parks.
The results showed that “plants arrangement in the park” was most appreciated in all three parks. Satisfaction with” lighting facilities” and “recreation facilities” was also above the threshold, while only South District Park reached the satisfaction threshold on “sports facilities”. The levels of satisfaction with “entrances and routes”, “restrooms in the park”, “children’s recreation facilities”, and “parking space” were all low. Based on the results, this study suggested that the neighborhood parks in Yuanlin Township should focus on improving the lack of facilities, the security of facilities inside the park, as well as perfecting the parking space arrangement, and engaging in regular maintenance and management, to enhance user satisfaction.
