家庭背景如何影響個人教育成就，一直是國內外很重要的議題。然而，國內的文獻大多還是利用戶籍資料或家庭調查資料做橫斷面的分析，比較難以觀察到行為面的個人特性，例如讀書時間或補習時間，也無法觀察到個人在家庭和學校中所接受到的教育環境。
本研究利用中央研究院、教育部和國科會合作計畫的臺灣教育長期追蹤資料庫，研究家庭背景如何影響家長選擇公私立學校的決策，以及對國中生的綜合分析能力的影響。由於資料範圍涵蓋學生個人、家長、老師和學習評量，且為追蹤調查之縱橫資料，故可以針對更多層面進行分析。
我們首先利用Probit Model分析家長選擇私立學校的決策，發現家庭經濟狀況、家長教育程度、以及家長對教育的重視程度是家長選擇私立學校決策很重要的因素。家長的教育程度越高、經濟能力越好、對教育越重視，就越有可能將子女送去私立學校就讀。
接著我們分析家庭背景對學生綜合分析能力的影響，由於公私立學校的學生是來自背景很不相同的家庭，會有樣本選擇偏誤的問題，故我們運用Heckman二階段方法處理內生樣本選擇模型，並進一步將公立學校親生子女和收養子女分開分析。實證結果發現家庭背景確實是影響國中生學習能力很重要的因素，包括父母教育程度、家庭每月所得或經濟變故、家長職業和對學生取得高等教育的期望等。然而，我們也發現到公私立學校的實證結果有很大的不同，且比較公立學校親生子女和收養子女的實證結果也會有所差異。
最後，我們還利用固定效果模型進行家庭背景對學生綜合分析能力影響的分析以處理許多觀察不到的因素，結果發現家中發生經濟變故對國中生學習能力會有很大的影響，而家庭平均每月所得的變動反而沒有顯著的影響，可見家庭經濟狀況的穩定對子女學習能力的必要性。

This thesis asks whether family background has any impact on parents’ school choice and student performance. The results suggest that parents’ schooling and family income are important factors for parents to choose private school. Besides, family background, such as parents’ schooling and occupation, family income, economic shock, and educational expectation, also plays an important role on student achievement.
