Abstract SENTIENT BEINGS Ming-Gui, Xie Master of Art in Graduate Institute of Sound and Image Studies in Documentary SENTIENT BEINGS Ming-Gui, Xie Master of Arts in Graduate Institute of Sound and Image Studies in Documentary Tainan National University of the Arts, Summer 2007 Key word: Sentient Beings, The Art for self-healing, Art Therapy, Documentary for self-healing, Documentary, Creation & Research, Creative Images, Life Issues. Creation and research can enhance one’s self-awareness of inner life. The film ”Sentient Beings” is to record the spiritual voyage of how the maker was set to experience and be self-aware of her life, while the process of making is revealed through the appropriate imagery and visual vocabulary. I would like to thank the following people who inspired me with their life philosophy: This documentary, “Sentient Beings”, originated from the maker’s bereavement, because of ignorance which provoked the fears within her so that she was unable to take the grief on the instant. Subsequently the maker utilized the creative image as a therapeutic intervention in documenting and conveying her realization of “life” all over this self-healing voyage. This “creative statement” relates the maker’s self-healing track in her making of “Sentient Beings” over the five years from 2002 to 2007. The documentary “Sentient Beings” was created in order to transcend myself and to share with others. It is intended to help those who cannot accept the loss of life like me and to open a dialogue with those who have gone through and even beyond the bereavement. Giving an account of “Sentient Beings” and narrated in my own language, this research of creation involves very intimate and personal themes but may not completely convey my whole idea. Yet, the incompleteness just spares me a space to move forward constantly in the way to realization…..
