The study was designed to investigate the effect of the peer influence, as well as parenting style, on adolescent smoking, alcohol use, and betel-nut use, considering gender and social economic status. The data of the research was collected from the questionnaire filled out by senior high school students and their parents on Taiwan Educational Panel Survey, 2001. The sample size was 13,509 by using multistage stratified sampling. Logistic regression was used to test the hypotheses. The results showed that (1) peer behavior has a great influence on adolescent smoking, alcohol use, and betel-nut use; (2) peer behavior has relatively importance than parenting style in terms of adolescent smoking, alcohol use, and betel-nut use; (3) the students who grow under the uninvolved or authoritarian parenting styles families are more likely to smoke, drink, and chew betel-nuts than the students who grow under the indulgent or authoritative parenting styles families.
