To perform the urban plan, the Lukang Town Hall persisted in widening the Quan Zhou 2nd St., dismantling the relic of Ri Mao Hang, the very important and large-scale Jiao-hang , a symbol of the glorious and proud history of Lukang . To save this construction with history and memory, the “The Coolies”, a Lukang development association organized by a group of local young intellectuals, therefore came out to protest against the dismantling. They agitated for the government’s attention and they succeeded. The Provincial Culture Department authorized an expert in community conduct and scheme to handle this case. This expert held an installation in Lukang named “The Heart of History”. Ten installation artists were invited to engage in avant-garde artistic visual creation in the traditional constructions which space is with special symbolic meaning. Such a bold and daring experiment was quite supported by “The collies” at the very beginning; however, while sorts of conflicts explored between the artists and the residents, these young men showed more and more doubts about what the professionals and artists were doing….
