本研究主要目的係基於繁榮拉力與失業推力理論之觀點，探討台灣地區非農自營作業者就業行為與失業現象之關聯。本研究採用1982至1986年（循環性失業潮）、1988至1992年（經濟繁榮期）及1996年至2000年（結構性失業潮）主計處「人力運用調查」之原始統計資料，分別將各五年之非農勞動力樣本合併進行邏輯迴歸分析，以瞭解台灣地區失業現象與就業者是否屬於自營作業者之關聯；並瞭解失業現象對主要與次要勞動市場自營作業者之影響；此外亦進行比較不同時期下，自營作業者決定因素是否有所差異。研究結果發現：
一、失業現象與自營作業者之關聯方面
在控制其他變項之下，1982至1986年與1988至1992年兩個時期，就業者屬於自營作業者之可能性有顯著差異。若進一步將1982至1986年與1996至2000年等兩個階段失業期資料予以合併，則研究結果發現失業潮之下，就業者屬於自營作業者之可能性平均較非失業潮（1988至1992年）高。
二、失業現象與不同勞動市場自營作業者之關聯方面
在控制其他變項之下，1982至1986年與1996至2000年主要勞動市場就業者屬於自營作業者之可能性與1988至1992年有顯著差異，亦即在失業率較低時期，主要勞動市場就業者屬於自營作業者之可能性較高。
相較於1988至1992年，1982至1986年次要勞動市場就業者屬於自營作業者之可能性也有顯著差異，研究結果發現在失業率較高時期，次要勞動市場就業者屬於自營作業者之可能性較高。
三、不同時期下自營作業者決定因素之差異
研究發現在三個不同時期下，導致就業者屬於自營作業者之決定因素十分類似，本文同時進一步探討三個不同時期下，主要與次要勞動市場自營作業者決定因素之差異。

Based on the perspectives of prosperity pull and unemployment push theories, the purposes of this study are to explore: (1) the association of unemployment trend and the trend of self-employment in Taiwan; (2) the determination of the trend of self-employment for two segmented labor market; (3) the differences of determinants of self-employment among three periods. Using the data of 1982-1986, 1988-1992, and 1996-2000 Manpower Utilization Surveys, the findings indicate that: (1) given that personal and work characteristics are controlled, the probability of workers who were self-employed is higher in the 1982-1986 period than in the 1988-1992 period. And further, once the 1982-1986 period and the 1996-2000 period were combined to reflect a high unemployment period, the result indicates that the probability of workers who were self-employed is higher in the unemployment period than in the prosperity period. (2) given that personal and work characteristics are controlled, the probability of workers of primary labor market who were self-employed is lower in the 1982-1986 and the 1996-2000 periods than in the 1988-1992 period. And the probability of workers of secondary labor market who were self-employed is higher in the 1982-1986 period than in the 1988-1992 period. And further, once the 1982-1986 period and the 1996-2000 were combined to reflect a period of high unemployment, the result indicates that the probability of workers of secondary labor market who were self-employed is higher in the unemployment period than in the prosperity period. (3) the determinants of self-employment are similar in the three periods. Finally we further explore the differences of the determination process of self-employment between primary and secondary labor markets in the three periods.
