Background: This study explores the effects of several types of discrepancies of educational

aspirations, educational values, and parenting style between parents and children on

psychological well-being of adolescents in Taiwan.

Methods: This study uses data from the Taiwan Youth Project, a longitudinal study on the life

course of youth. One cohort of adolescents with matching parent data is examined in this study,

from the first wave when these adolescents are in their 3rd year of junior high in 2000 and from

the fifth wave when these adolescents have become young adults. Individual well-being is

measured by self-rated health, satisfaction with parent-child relationship, and happiness. Linear

regression models are used to predict the relationships between discrepancy of educational

aspirations/values and parenting style, family educational strategy, and family cohesion with

well-being separately for different kinds of discrepancy. The models also control for family

structure, parent education level, birth order, and sex.

Results: Family cohesion, educational strategy, and discrepancy of parenting style have the most

significant effects on psychological well-being. Students’ perceived discrepancy is the strongest

indicator of the effect of discrepancy on adolescent well-being. Baseline associations of variables

show stronger cross-sectional effects than longitudinal effects.

Conclusions: Certain discrepancies may be considered more normative, but poor educational

strategy or lack of family cohesion negatively affecting well-being in early adolescence need to

be minimized. Communication and cohesion within the family will benefit long-term well-being.
