本研究主要的目的是要探討Dublin Core與機讀編目格式之間的角色扮演、網路資源編目、替代性關係及Dublin Core未來發展前景等問題。由於自Dublin Core在1995年創制至今，其在圖書館界的發展如日中天，似乎有壓倒機讀編目格式之勢，引起國內圖書館界之疑慮，有鑑於此，乃對Dublin Core與機讀編目格式之間的關係作相關問題之探討，期望能為圖書館界解開疑慮，並進一步瞭解Dublin Core的優勢、機讀編目格式的地位，作為圖書館界修訂機讀編目格式時的參考，並為圖書館界「變」與「不變」之抉擇提供些許意見。
本研究以編目課程之專任教師與公私立大學及兩所國家圖書館之編目館員為對象，採用深度訪談、電話訪談與問卷調查的研究方法，共收集了7位編目教師及55所圖書館合計139位編目館員的寶貴意見。利用描述統計分析結果，其結果如下︰
一、根據問卷結果顯示，編目館員對Dublin Core普遍不熟悉，更遑論系統之設計與運作，但對於網路電子資源之蒐集、組織與整理的工作，大部分編目教師認為是必須實施的業務，然在編目館員部分，認為圖書館只須組織、整理，並不需要編目的人數較多。
二、兩者之重要性，所得的結果乃是兩者皆為Metadata的一員，無所謂何者重要或不重要，換言之，對資源組織來講兩者同樣重要。
三、針對網路資源編目的完備性，調查結果認為Dublin Core與機讀編目格式對於網路資源編目或傳統圖書館編目作業均可勝任，轉換與否端賴各館之編目政策而定。
四、Dublin Core與機讀編目格式的替代性方面，結論是絕大多數的編目教師與編目館員均認為短期之內Dublin Core不會取代機讀編目格式，長期發展則視國際形勢而定。
五、對於Dublin Core未來的發展前景，大部分的編目教師看好其發展，認為有發展潛力；而編目館員部分則認為Dublin Core發展愈趨複雜，待其發展完整後，其複雜度與機讀編目格式不相上下，因此，兩者應共存共榮，互相作為互補。

The main purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between Dublin Core and Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC); we discuss the roles they play, the cataloging of Internet resources, the possible replacement of MARC by Dublin Core and the future of Dublin Core. Dublin Core was defined in 1995, and is still under development now. Although it tends to take the place of MARC, the catalog librarians doubt its superiority over MARC. Hesitation of whether to adopt Dublin Core or not leads to this study.
This study is based on in-depth interviews, telephone interviews and questionnaires. Samples are collected from 7 catalog course teachers and 139 catalog librarians of 55 universities and two National Libraries. Descriptive statistical methods were applied in summarizing and evaluating the data. The results are summarily listed as follows:
1. Most (39.56%) catalog librarians are not familiar with Dublin Core, and think that the materials on the Internet must be collected, but needn’t be cataloged. The result is different from the teachers’ idea that the materials on the Internet should be cataloged by librarians.
2. Both Dublin Core and MARC, each one is a member of the Metadata family, are equally important in organizing resources.
3. As to the completeness of the cataloging of Internet resources, our results show both Dublin Core and MARC are adequate. Whether to switch over to Dublin Core depends on the catalog policy of a library.
4. As to the “replacement” problem, most of the catalog teachers and librarians tend to think that Dublin Core could not replace MARC in the near future.
5. Most of the catalog teachers view Dublin Core’s potential favorably and think it will have a prospective future; however, the librarians think Dublin Core will, after fully evolving, become as complicated as MARC and both should coexist and complement each other.
