The company ran by the writer, who started as a contractor with Kymco, has produced plastic component of motorcycle since 1977. The writer frequently heard from his colleagues being unable to pronounce the motorcycle-related Japanese words correctly. Inspired by this, it became a motivation to do a further research in the relating fields. This paper first examines students who major in Japanese and those motorbike sellers who do not have any experience in the Japanese language to see how much Japanese they understand through questionnaires. Then, take the result as a baseline for further suggestions in Japanese teaching and learning. This essay is composed of five chapters. Chapter one aims at the motivation and purpose of the research including previous researches, research area and methods. We can see from a related research paper, “針對臺灣語化的日語”,that there are certain usage related to motorcycle. Moreover, it is obvious to see the special feature of Taiwanese pronunciation. Chapter two compares regulations of motorcycle between Japan and Taiwan. Then, it draws a conclusion to the definition of motorcycle and its related usage. Chapter three first investigates five representative text books in Taiwan and examines how many motorcycle-related usage they include. Secondly, it further investigates how many motorcycle-related words collected in “品詞別•級別1萬語語彙分類集”, a vocabulary collection assigned for Japanese Language Proficiency Test. The result is that there are close to none. According to the result, Japanese learners have to do research on their own in order to take the first level exam of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Chapter four compiles the result from the questionnaire into a chart and analyzes it. The result shows learners’ age and Japanese language learning experience are not in 100% direct proportion. However, people, aged above 70, who were born under Japanese ruled period were 100% correct with the usage. Another result revealed from the survey showed that Men generally knew these words better than women. It is believed that those motorcycle dealers have a higher chance to know these words even if they have never learned Japanese before. This shows that Men are generally more familiar with motorcycle-related terms. Chapter five sums up the conclusion from each chapter. Also, basing on the result, this paper provides suggestions for composing learning materials, teaching and learning methods in the learner''s point of view.
