就像大多數的藝術欣賞能力一樣，我們對舞蹈的欣賞能力並非與生俱來，而是多少需要靠後天的培養。一般未接受過舞蹈教育或訓練的民眾對於舞蹈的認識通常來自於在生活中所接觸的資訊或是實際觀賞舞蹈的經驗，各式各樣的資訊可能是文字、影音或是人際之間的交流。
Polanyi將人類的知識分成兩種：可以用文字記錄的外顯知識，以及無法用文字記錄，並且存在於實踐行動中的知識，稱為默會知識。坊間有關舞蹈欣賞的書籍大多是從外顯知識的面向去教導民眾認識舞蹈；相對來說，從內隱的默會知識來探討舞蹈欣賞歷程的介紹就比較少。因此，本研究主要想要探討一般未受過舞蹈教育的雲門舞集觀眾，在舞蹈欣賞的過程中如何理解舞蹈，並且如何培養這些相關的默會知識。
本研究採用質化研究的方法，針對15位未受過舞蹈教育或訓練的雲門舞集觀眾進行訪談，並且提出以舞蹈欣賞的歷程為架構，將觀眾的欣賞歷程分成看演出之前、看演出的當下、看完演出之後等三個階段。研究發現雲門觀眾在理解舞蹈時所展現出的默會知識分別是：「(意義的)解讀」、「情感(的共鳴)」、「(經驗的)串連」和「(個人的)衍伸」。
事實上雲門舞集觀眾在日常生活中就已經在從事許多與培養舞蹈欣賞能力有關的活動，這些相關活動都會累積在個人經驗中，等到真正看演出時就有助於解讀、情感、串連等三種默會知識的展現，看完演出之後觀眾又進一步進行相關的活動或是展現衍伸的默會知識，最後這些經驗再回饋到個人身上，關於舞蹈欣賞的默會知識於是又再加深一層。

Like most of the art appreciating abilities, we need to learn how to appreciate dace since we are not born with these appreciative abilities. People who didn’t learn about dance courses, usually get their dance knowledge via all kinds of relative information or actual dance watching experience in life. Various information could be articles, videos or people conversations etc.
Polanyi indicates two kinds of knowledge: “explicit knowledge” and “tacit knowledge”. Many books talk about how to appreciate dance by introducing “explicit knowledge” of dance. Comparatively speaking, there are less talking about how to appreciate dance via “tacit knowledge” approach. Therefore, the researcher tries to explore how the Cloud Gate audience understanding dace, and how to cultivate the relative tacit knowledge since they didn’t officially learn about dance courses.
In this study, the researcher uses the qualitative approach to interview 15 Cloud Gate audience who didn’t learn about dance courses before. After that, the researcher raises a structure of dance appreciating progress which divides to three stages: before, being, and after watching the dace performance. The researcher also concludes that the tacit knowledge of understanding dace are: “decoding”, “emotion”, “articulating” and “extending”.
In fact, the Cloud Gate audience have been doing many relative activities to cultivate the dance appreciating ability in their daily life. These activities would all become personal experience. When the audience watching the dace performance, the relative experience would help the three kinds or tacit knowledge emerge. They are “decoding”, “emotion” and “articulating”. After watching the dace performance, the audience would also do some relative activities or to “extend” the story of dance. Finally, all the experience of relative activities and practicing of tacit knowledge would feed back to themselves. And the tacit knowledge of dance appreciate would also increase.
