In academic circles, it is generally believed that trust, be it interpersonal or institutional, is a variable with positive impact on happiness. Such beliefs, however, have not taken into consideration the endogeneity issues between the two. This research utilizes data from the third and fifth waves (1994-2007) of the World Value Survey (WVS) to apply a two-stage least-squares method using city size as an instrumental variable, to avoid endogeneity issues, and finds that trust does not impact happiness. Additionally, this research also conducts comparisons before and after applying the instrumental variable, and finds that trust is in fact related to happiness, but it is not a relationship in which trust impacts happiness. This research further conjectures that the causal relationship between the two should be that happiness impacts trust, or there exists a variable that simultaneously impacts both happiness and trust, but no direct relationships exist between happiness and trust.
