Guava (Psidium Guajava) belonging to the genus of Peachium has high anti-oxidation effect and its anti-oxidation content ties to the mulberry and Kyoho grape. It also has the effect of lowering blood sugar. In Taiwan, Psidium Guajava Linn is one of the fruits cultivated widespreadly and could be planted all year round. The public usually regard Psidium Guajava Linn as a normal fruit. However, in recent years many people have begun to study its ingredients, nutritional value and efficacy gradually. The application of guava could be divided into different parts including fruits, flowers, leaves, bark, and roots. The effects of guava are: hemostasis, diarrhea, anti-cancer, improvement of diabetes, scurvy, improvement of sore pain, wounds unhealed, sores, acute pharyngitis, acute appendicitis, diarrhea in children and other symptoms. Also, people suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancers are very suitable for eating guava but should not be overindulged for people having constipation, kidney disease, and overweight. Lately, Psidium Guajava Linn have been reported aggresively on its general application and medicinal use of guava pulp, peels, leaves, etc.The guava leaf has a remarkable performance on its nutrition of antioxidant activity, and it also contains many phenolic compounds such as enzymatic acid, quercetin, caffeic acid Procatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid and kaempferol. These compounds could effectively eliminate α-diphenyl-β-picrylh ydrazyl (DPPH) radicals and create anti-oxidation, so it can keep fatty acids in the phospholipids on the cell membrane from oxidation and protect the function and integrity of the cells. The polyphenols extracted from guava leaves have preventive and inhibitory effects on diabetes and prostate cancer. The polyphenols of guava leaves could resist saccharification, prevent the growth of glycated proteins on the cell membrane, and protect the permeability of cell membranes and normal cell membranes to inhibits the growth of prostate cancer cells. Additionally, it has been found that in the animal experiments of rats, the liver index and blood lipids in the serum are decreased.
