由於網際網路及寬頻網路的普及，使得各種網際網路的應用相當興盛。遠端控制就是其中之一，透過網際網路去控制位於遠端的家電設備動作，使家電設備的遙控操作不再侷限於裝設位置附近，這對促進現代生活的便利與普遍無疑是一大利器。
目前網路間的資料傳遞業界也漸漸以XML格式為標準，資料格式的統一，使得支援的設備也越來越普及化，應用XML可使系統於未來可符合業界標準，也避免了專屬系統所需的大量研發成本。
本研究是利用IrDA設備安裝崁入於一般家電中代替目前一般家電所裝置的紅外線接收器，再配合內建的XML控制格式來使一般家電升級為資訊家電且容易擴充控制；因為IrDA具有半雙工特性且為一般電腦設備、PDA所支援，因此可使安裝此系統的一般家電可升級為資訊家電，更可由遠端透過網際網路控制，甚至一般的PDA即可充當遙控器控制家電設備，不必每個家電設備都需搭配一支遙控器，且可將家電設備的狀態即時回覆給控制端。

Internet has become many people''s daily life, and the broadband networking has reached many houses, many applications has moved from traditional slower connection to the faster Internet. Remote Control over the Internet is one of them. With Internet connectivity, it becomes natural and relatively cost effective to remotely control home appliace in a real remote distance, instead of being limited to the short range near the appliances. In other words, Internet has become a useful tool to greatly extend the scope of modern life, without much cost.
Nowadays XML has become a de facto standard for network data exchange in many networking industries. As a result of unified data format, same application can be easily adapted for many facilities, this can greatly reduce the cost for developing special device drivers for various devices.
This research is to have IrDA devices embedded in the home appliances, to enhance or replace the existing IR(Infra Red) receivers. Equiped with a built-in XML parser on the IrDA device, the hosting home appliance can easily be converted to a digital information device. Also enhancing the existing function becomes easy; IrDA is half-duplex and is supported by various digital devices such as notebook computers, cellular phones and PDAs, it simply upgrades home appliances into information systems, which can be controlled remotely through Internet. A bonus convenience for PDA is that it be used as an intelligent Remote Control device to operate all the home appliances facilitated with the IrDA system, there is no more trouble for keeping a Remote Control for each home appliance.
